About page of Melanie Taylor Photo documentary style wedding photographer based in Halifax Nova Scotia East Coast Canada

I aim to document each wedding from every corner of the room. I’m documenting the day from your perspective, preserving your own memories, but I’m also attending to everything around me. I’m telling the story through photographs. I’m oscillating between giving you the direction you crave when it’s warranted and blending in with your guests when it’s time to document. I am constantly aiming to capture the day in an authentic and yet artistic way. A way not just anyone can do.

Hey – I’m Melanie. But you can call me Mel.

I’m a visual artist. And not just photography; I’ve been painting realism since the age of 9. I have been trained in all forms of art, but photography has become my career. I picked up my first DSLR camera at age 17 and have been steadily working to improve ever since.

After completing my first degree in Newfoundland (where I was born and raised), I continued my education with a Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology at TMU in 2016. My wandering spirit then took me to a new home in Galway, Ireland, teaching sport psychology at a local university. I returned to Toronto in April, 2020 to be with my partner for the ‘end-of-the-world’ (a.k.a. Covid) and turned my passion into a full-time business. We’ve since re-located to Halifax, NS, gotten married, had a baby girl named Daisy June, and now I get to spend my time capturing east coast weddings and dancing to Great Big Sea on the dance floor.

I absolutely love working with people and I love attending weddings; now, I get to do both in a way that hones my creativity and gives clients personalized art they and generations after them will cherish …. I don’t have words to describe that type of perfection. My life has found it’s calling.

But let’s hear from them…

“Looking for an amazing photographer? Look no further. Melanie is a true INCREDIBLE talent, you can really see the amount of effort and detail she puts into taking each photo. We were absolutely speechless when we received our gallery... Happy tears. <3 Coming from someone who doesn't love photos of me unless they are shot from the perfect angle, she didn't even know what that angle that was and still 1000% nailed it. I would and will recommend Melanie to anyone, such a kind gal as well, so easy to work with. She made pure magic for us!!”

“Melanie is the absolute best!!!!!!!! My fiancé and I aren't used to being the center of attention, even more so being the "stars" of a photoshoot, but Melanie is really kind and easy to work with! She has such a warm and positive energy that we felt comfortable with her after just a few minutes. The photos are a dream, too!
🥹 It's impossible to choose a top 10 because they're all timelessly beautiful. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! 💕”

“We wanted to make sure we took a moment to say the biggest thank you in the entire universe to you. We truly felt like you were so much more than a photographer, but a friend that we got to enjoy our wedding day with. you made the photography aspect of the night so simple and so fun and I know that meant a lot to everybody there. Photography can be something that’s nerve-wracking for a lot of people and you completely took all the nerves away and made it feel like part of the party. You are truly so talented at what you do and we couldn’t have imagined a better photographer that suited our needs and our style for our big day. we hope you enjoyed yourself and will absolutely recommending you to anyone and everyone that we know who is getting married in the future.”

~ Anisa & Hannah

“Melanie has been amazing to work with. She understood what we were looking for and dove right in. From the first meeting, to the actual day-of, she was efficient, kind, fun, and is truly a master at her art. Our wedding photos are to die for - they really do capture the day entirely. We have cried over and over reliving the day, seeing all of the raw emotions and the love from everyone in attendance. Thank you Melanie, for making our wedding day picture dream come true!”

With every wedding I have the honour to photograph, I set out to do four things really, really well:

  1. Create trust. I will ask everything I need to know before your wedding. I’ll know the special details. I’ll know the photo combinations. I’ll know the family dynamics. My preparation before every wedding allows your photography to be one less thing you have to worry about on your wedding day. You’ll just know I got it.

  2. Capture the day from every corner of the room. On every wedding day, I prioritize remaining present. I’m constantly aware of what’s happening around me. I’m looking for the emotion in the room. I’m documenting the families meeting for the first time. The tears and laughs during the ceremony. All the moments you didn’t get to see. All the feelings you felt. I will show you all the beauty you experienced and all the beauty you created but didn’t get to see.

  3. Make you comfortable. I’m hands on where I know you’d like me to be. I’m there to direct you for your portraits because I don’t expect you to be models. I’ll get you to loosen up. I’ll get you to elicit the emotion. I’ll make you and your family feel comfortable with me and THAT will make all the difference in what is expressed.

  4. Make art. Your final gallery will be an art piece on its own. It will tell the entire story, it will bring you to tears, and it will paint a perfectly imperfect picture of your wedding day. But at the same time, I pour my heart and soul into each individual photo, making each one have the candid beauty and artful quality to stand on it’s own in a frame. And that is why you need an artist.
